Truth and Reconciliation

Mrs. Tegarts Grade 4/5 class participated in a project titled:

BCTF Gladys We Never Knew: The Life of a Child in a BC Indian Residential School.

Each student in the class wrote a letter to Gladys and/or her family. As a class we decided to contact the family to see if they would be receptive to receiving the letters, which they agreed to and they responded with an email thanking us and letting us know they would respond.

Much to our delight at the beginning of our 2025/26 school year, these now Grade 5/6 students received mini-chocolate bars, Every Child Matters stickers, a letter from Gladys' family and beautiful handmade pins created by Diane Stewart, an elder and survivor of residential school.  The photo shows each pin which was meant to represent beauty and uniqueness, like every child that attended residential school.

Traditional Tea Presentation

On March 11, the Indigenous Education students hosted La Verna and Clarissa at our school for a presentation on traditional teas.  Students enjoyed about learning about and tasting four teas:  Bear Root, Rat Root, Labrador Tea and Mint.  Thank you to La Verna and Clarissa!

Curriculum Connections - Watercolour Bookmarks

In February, the grade 5,6,7 class used natural plant dyes to create watercolour bookmarks.  Students learned about local plants used by the Ktunaxa Nation and Shuswap Band for dyes, food and medicines.  Students prepared their own plant dyes from fruits, vegetables and teas using different methods: paste, juice, infusion and decoction.

Indigenous Learning in our School

If you have been into the School, you will have seen the beautiful Bulletin board of the Seven Teachings.  Take a moment to read all about them!

Indigenous Veterans Day Celebrated at EES during Remembrance Day Assembly

Grade six students, Aidan, Travis and Aliya researched and will be presenting the contributions of Indigenous war hero, Tommy Prince during the annual Edgewater Elementary School’s Day assembly on November 10th at 9:30am - Family Members Welcome!

They will be outlining the many contributions, Mr. Prince made during WWI, WWII and the Korean War.   Mr. Prince continued to have a positive impact even when he wasn’t enlisted; upon his return home from overseas, he saved a man from drowning!

Thank you, Mr. Prince, for your years of service; we remember and honor you.

Special thanks to Aidan, Travis and Aliya for your hard work in honoring this important soldier!!!

Indigenous Veterans Day is commemorated annually on November 8th
